In order to protect the interest of juvenile delinquents, the Supreme Court of India set forth guidelines and directions for the government. These judicial decisions relate to detention of juveniles in jails separate from adult prisoners, a more humanitarian sentencing policy, rehabilitation of young offenders in accordance with provisions of the Children Act, and a right to a speedy trial procedure. Duties of the government relating to the juvenile justice system and duties of the magistrates or judges regarding the trial of a juvenile delinquent are delineated. These judicial decisions attempt to provide for the care, protection, and treatment as well as the development, welfare, education, and rehabilitation of a delinquent juvenile. An interaction of an activist judiciary, a responsible legislature, and an alert administration can provide social and economic justice for this group of young people. 41 references
