Statistical information is presented regarding the establishment of special schools in accordance with existing child legislative acts from 17 States and 3 union territories in India for 1984-85.
Abstract
The data indicate that the Manipur, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Tripura and Union Territories of Andaman Nicobar Islands, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, and Lakshadweep have not yet set up the institutions as provided under the act, although they have implemented their children acts. For each State and territory, tabular data are given for the number of government or volunteer institutions, their capacity, and daily average population. Number of children admitted and discharged from the school for various reasons such as end of commitment, age for release, appeal, bail, license, unconditional premature release, transfer, escape, and death are provided. In addition, children admitted to these special schools are classified according to health and marital status, and the permanently handicapped children are classified according to the nature of their handicap. Statistical data are tabulated for the destitute, neglected, and victim children as well as the nature of offense for delinquent children. Offenses under other acts and sickness and mortality among the inmates of the special schools are covered. The cost of these schools is categorized under establishment charges and expenditure on children covering food, clothing, bedding, education, vocational training, medical treatment, recreational charges, and welfare after care services. 10 tables and 23 notes
