This information booklet is intended for use by both staff and the public. It explains what unit management is, why it was introduced into the Canadian Correctional Service, how it is intended to work, and its effects on both staff and inmates.
Abstract
Unit Management is intended to effectively standardize the management of inmates and provide a focus for correctional practices. The Unit Management approach is based on meaningful interaction between staff and inmates, teamwork, and open communication. The booklet describes the process by which this happens and the responsibilities of the various levels of correctional personnel involved such as the unit manager, the correctional supervisor, the case management officer, correctional officers I and II, and the coordinator case management. The booklet also discusses the effects of unit management on inmates and on recruitment. The principles of correctional operations for Canada are also presented and discussed in light of this unit management style of operations. 3 charts
