The bulletin is a programmed learning text designed to teach first-line supervisors how to initiate disciplinary actions, what are the principles and procedures of the progressive disciplinary process, how to decide what type of disciplinary action is called for by specific types of employee rule violations, and how and when to discipline subordinates.
Abstract
Topics include disciplinary actions, purpose of progressive discipline, informal discipline, formal discipline, types of disciplinary actions, guidelines for recommending discipline, and two case studies of disciplinary actions. The bulletin explains why it is important for supervisors to document perceived violations of established rules or regulations before initiating a disciplinary action against a subordinate and why employees should always be provided with a written policies and procedures manual. Eight questions a supervisor should review before taking any disciplinary action against a subordinate are listed. A listing of review questions are included in the bulletin.
