Information came from a literature review, discussions and written contacts with practitioners and researchers, and a survey of existing programs. Results showed that sex offenses have no single cause and that certain treatment approaches are useful in addressing the many factors that may contribute to an individual's offending. The goal of treatment is to prevent relapses rather than to cure the problem. Problems currently needing attention include the isolation and lack of coordination of programs in various organizations, inadequate information sharing, inadequate training opportunities, and insufficient numbers of experts to meet the demand for programs. Outcome research is also lacking. Changes are needed to improve continuity and coordination, program development, risk assessment and release, training standards, and the focus and direction of programs.
