This paper analyzes some of the methodological advantages, disadvantages, and problems involved in longitudinal studies, especially in the area of research in personal development and criminology.
Abstract
The main issue is that of understanding stability versus change and the adjustment of the theoretical and methodological conceptualizations connected with them. Longitudinal research also provides important metatheoretical messages. Longitudinal approaches are recommended that can methodologically include the individual's environment as well as aspects of discontinuity and developmental turning points as suggested in several theories of human development. 23 references (Author abstract modified)
