The article refers to the supervision measures introduced by Law 663/'86 which modify the prison system of 1975 to ensure more effective enforcement of order and discipline. These measures are intended mostly for those inmates who display particularly disruptive behavior. The most significant aspects of these provisions are discussed in addition to various problems associated with the interpretation and implementation of these rules. On the basis on the general criteria established by law for this system of particular supervision, the author identifies the various types of restriction that can be used. Of these restrictions, the most important seems to be continuous surveillance by the staff to prevent inmates' behavior from being detrimental to the order and the security of the institution.
