Statistical information is provided on the annual changes in the California Department of Corrections' (CDC) prison and parole system from 1970 through 1990.
Abstract
Various offender demographic characteristics and data on institutional bed capacity are presented in graphic and tabular format. The institutional population is categorized according to the number of offenders incarcerated in a California State prison, conservation camp, community-based facility, or Department of Mental Health hospital. Additional data are provided on a racial/ethnic composition analysis; the change in the percentage of felon inmates incarcerated for violent, property, drug, and other offenses; per capita rate of felon new admissions by offense category; the number of parole violators returned to prison; and the percentage composition of the felon institutions populations with respect to admission/return status. Other categories cover growth in the felon parole and civil narcotic addict outpatient population as well as the number of felons annually released to parole, the change in the average month of time served in CDC institutions by felons first released to parole, and changes in the bed capacity of CDC facilities and the institution population. 10 tables and 9 figures
