Issues specific to the design of a correctional facility for women are discussed with emphasis on the need to support programming that recognizes and addresses female offenders' roles as parents, their histories of abuse, and their involvement with crime because of their distorted perceptions of their relationships with men.
Abstract
The facility design also needs to facilitate efforts to address low skill and education levels and poor work histories and to encourage the practice of self-sufficiency, improved relationships and responsible behavior. Study information came from a literature review and a survey of seven women's correctional facilities. The discussion focuses on differences between actual and needed facilities, management options, design options, programs, services, and the steps that should be taken in planning a women's facility. Design options and innovative designs are also presented. Footnotes, charts, 31 references, and appended checklist and sample designs
