This report summarizes major consensus themes from small group discussions and presentations at a forum on the future of drug policy in America; forum attendees were 100 criminal and juvenile justice professionals.
Abstract
The small group on drug treatment viewed treatment as an integral part of drug abuse prevention. Treatment recommendations focus on the involvement of community institutions in developing and delivering drug prevention, education, intervention, and treatment programs; government funding for a broad range of health and economic deficits related to drug abuse; governmental funding for the development of objective treatment performance standards; multiagency program evaluation prior to program funding; and low-cost drug treatment on demand in every community. Recommendations pertinent to drug abuse in the workplace include tax incentives to encourage the development of employer drug programs, State task forces to study the feasibility of requiring health coverage for drug treatment, and peer assistance programs by professional groups. Speakers' comments focus on drug abuse treatment, drug abuse in the workplace, drug abuse prevention, private-sector involvement in the drug crisis, and the status of drug control.
