These statistical tables present information on the salaries of 12 police positions in United States municipalities with 10,000 or more in population.
Abstract
The data were gathered through a mail survey conducted in 1989. A total of 1,258 municipalities, representing 45.6 percent of those surveyed, responded. Results showed that the average minimum annual salary for police privates, who are usually new recruits, is $22,042; the average maximum is $28,872. The maximum salaries for chiefs and commissioners are $52,001 and $56,190, respectively. The size of a jurisdiction is positively related to the average salary. Variations also exist in the extent to which salary levels increase over time. Tables
