A computer-administered interview was used to obtain self-reports of past criminal behavior from a sample of 99 institutionalized rapists and child molesters who had been mandated to receive specialized treatment.
Abstract
In a result consistent with previous studies, the interviewees disclosed a high level of undetected sexual aggression; there was a surprisingly wide variety and high degree of nonsex offenses. The findings indicate that nearly 20,000 nonsex offenses were committed by the sample in the year prior to their institutionalization, with rapists committing a disproportionate share. Although some of these crimes probably occurred in conjunction with a sex crime or an attempt, there was a high frequency of aggravated assault not in connection with a sex offense. Child molesters, for example, committed many assaults and property crimes. These results were validated through a comparison with official arrest records and a comparison with the relative frequencies of the same crimes measured by a different method. 3 tables, 6 notes, and 27 references (Author abstract modified)
