Abstract
Crime and arrest rates were calculated using annual population estimates provided by California's Department of Finance, using data from the 1980 census for the 1985-89 estimates and data from the 1990 census for the 1990 crime and arrest rates. Results showed that the rate of index offenses increased 8 percent from 1985 to 1990, while decreasing by 0.6 percent from 1989 to 1990. The violent crime rate has increased 35.8 percent since 1985, while the property crime rate has declined by 0.9 percent. Convictions increased from 58.3 percent to 65.5 percent of adult felony arrests, and 87.6 percent of convicted offenders received incarcerative sentences. Figures and tables
