Reviewing the current research, discussion focuses on the advantages and problems associated with interlock programs and includes suggestions for improving such programs. Potential advantages of ignition interlocks include instant and direct feedback of the driver's breath alcohol content (BAC), payment of the cost by the offender, and the provision to allow an individual to retain driving privileges and to continue to earn a livelihood. In two studies that provide recidivism data, the rearrest rates were between 3.4-3.9 percent in the interlock groups compared with 5.9-9.8 percent in the comparison groups. Future research needs to examine the factors that influence the adjudicative use of ignition interlocks and the readiness of courts to monitor and enforce their implementation. 1 figure, 1 table, and 21 references (Author abstract modified)
