First releases made up 72.5 percent of the group, while 22.6 percent were classified as rereleases, and the remainder (4.9 percent) were released after alternative to revocation hearings or for other reasons. Nine out of ten of the persons released left the institutions for supervision in the community on parole, mandatory release, or special action early release status. Unarmed burglary, other drug offenses, and theft were the offenses for which males first and rereleased had most often been sentenced. The average sentence for all offenders released was 60.6 months. Males released were serving average sentences of 61.8 months; females, 43.5 months. Males had an average length of stay of 22.8 months; females, 15.8 months. One-fourth of the males released were categorized as assaultive offenders, over one-tenth as drug offenders, and slightly less than one-half as property offenders.
