The author identifies so-called autonomous groups and the peace movement as the main interior security problem because of the strain they place on the social fabric of Germany. The 200-man GSG 9 force consists of a headquarters unit with commanding officer, a communications and documentation unit, three combat units, an engineer unit with three teams, a training unit, helicopters, and logistical services. Successful GSG 9 candidates have completed a career training course in a military occupational specialty, are exceptionally fit both physically and mentally, and are motivated. Basic training for the group includes sports with an emphasis on martial arts, police duties, shooting and target practice, legal instruction, and a 2-day basic seminar on psychology. In the 5 months of special training the candidates subsequently receive, they are instructed in criminology, psychology, law, communication with criminals, weapons technology, explosives expertise, and martial arts. After completing these two courses, the recruits are transferred to one of the combat units of the GSG 9, where they may receive even more specialized training. 1 appendix
