In Wayne County, Michigan, research was initiated by the sheriff's department to improve tire mileage on its vehicles.
Abstract
Wayne County is an ideal tire research site, since the roads include interstates, freeways, inner city and suburban paved roads, and gravel country roads. The sheriff's department made contacts with Goodyear and other tire companies to discuss maintenance and operational tire problems. Several companies supplied the department with set of police pursuit tires for the research. Tires were installed and monitored over time to determine which tires lasted longer and performed better under police driving conditions. After testing Goodyear, B.F. Goodrich, Bridgestone, Firestone, and General products, it was found that Goodyear tires consistently gave the best dry weather performance. General, Bridgestone, Firestone, and Goodrich tires offered better foul weather performance. The cost-effectiveness of tire rotation and other maintenance procedures is discussed, and the need to consider pavement design and material when selecting and evaluating tires is emphasized. It is recommended that any police department interested in saving money conduct its own tire research.
