Several studies from Project 12-Ways, an eco-behavioral approach to the treatment and prevention of child abuse and neglect, are reviewed.
Abstract
Parents accused of child neglect, a serious, prevalent, and often chronic problem, may refuse treatment or may fail to cooperate fully. The multifaceted, in-home, in situ assessments and treatments of Project 12-Ways may be invasive, intrusive, and extensive but also may prove to be the treatment of choice for the intractable problem of child neglect. Some examples of empirically evaluated treatments for child neglect are described. These deal with hygiene, nutrition, home safety, cleanliness, affective skills training, infant stimulation, and teaching health-related skills. Child neglect could be prevented if "hands-on" training and educational programs were more available in schools for teenagers and even younger children. 23 references (Author abstract modified)
