Renovation included gutting the building, building fences, and installing a videosystem. Bullpens were designed to divide the interior and to provide a separation of inmates. Additional toilets and lavatories were added. Supplies such as mattresses, sheets, towels, blankets, and 50 double bunk beds were ordered from vendors; food, medical, and laundry services were contracted out. Twenty-nine new corrections personnel were hired and trained for State certification in a mobile classroom that was rented out. A crisis management team was formed to report progress, solve problems, and plan for the next step. Upon inspections from the DOC, Health Department, Fire Marshall Office, and other government agencies, the facility was granted temporary certification to house 101 minimum to medium security inmates until October 1991. A petition has been filed requesting permanent certification because of the low construction costs and design concept of this successful low security facility.
