A 1988 conference brought together criminal justice personnel, elected officials, researchers, and others to examine decisions to grant bail in Australia and the reasons for the substantial increases in the numbers of prisoners detained before trial.
Abstract
The discussions examined the relationship between bail decisions and prison overcrowding; the goals and results of bail legislation; and innovations such as electronic monitoring of offenders, intensive supervision, and the use of presentence reports. Additional sessions considered the use of bail research in policymaking, practical problems related to bail and pretrial detention, the risks of additional victimization caused by suspects released on bail, and the perspectives of police and prosecutors. The role of bail for drug law offenders and serious offenders was also discussed. Tables, footnotes, chapter reference lists, list of conference participants, and index
