An effort is made to explain and illustrate some of the factors inherent in the present and developing technology for the attempted capture, storage, and reproduction of essential information contained in a fingerprint.
Abstract
Resolution, in the case of an image such as a fingerprint impression, is a measure of the smallness of the detail that can be displayed faithfully; in terms of near field visible images, resolution usually is expressed in terms of "line-pairs," that is, a black line and a white line of equal width per unit distance. The Microcopy Resolution Test Chart is one way to measure resolution. Some of the factors that influence the resolution of an image, which are dependent on the process that is used to sense and to reproduce the image, are considered. 2 figures and 6 references
