This textbook discusses police management and leadership in principle and practice.
Abstract
The book synthesizes material from other fields to broaden concepts of police leadership and management and to ensure better results and improve performance. The book is intended for police professionals who not only exercise an executive function, but also instruct line officers in what to expect from those who manage them. The book introduces the concept of leadership as dictated by social demands and values in addition to constraints imposed by the political and economic milieus. A number of chapters trace the historical development of the concept of leadership from the exclusive right of the nobility in ancient times to modern notions of authority and leadership. Some chapters explore the various theories and models for leadership and management as well as a system for analysis and conceptualization of teaching leadership. Other chapters delve into the cooperative leadership system of the police, which is currently in use and is taught at the West German police-leadership academy. This system is compared with other leadership models and is later analyzed in terms of its effectiveness in improving performance and resolving conflicts. References, flow charts and diagrams related to systems analysis, and appended models.
