The first section collates statistics on both lower and higher civil courts in each of the 11 West German Laender or States. A special section on family court activities covers such issues as types of transactions, types of sentences, duration of proceedings, and court costs. The third section reports on the activities of lower and higher criminal courts for each of the 11 West German Laender. Since January 1989, a new method of compiling data has been used for the criminal courts. As a result, the charts provide a clearer view of transactions; however, a direct comparison of these data to previous years is no longer possible. Each section begins with an overview of proceedings: unfinished business at the beginning of the year, new cases, and finished/unfinished transactions at the end of the year. Information on court personnel for 1988, which was not available in last year's statistics, is also included.
