This ninth annual National Prison Census for Australia, conducted June 30, 1990, presents statistics on all persons, both convicted and unconvicted, held in adult correctional institutions in all Australian jurisdictions.
Abstract
Summary tables by sex and jurisdiction present data on inmate characteristics, their offenses, and sentences, compared by sex and jurisdiction. Topics covered include institution, security classification, age, aboriginality, State/country of birth, last known address, marital status at admission, employment status, education, prior adult imprisonment, legal status, most serious offense/charge, type of sentence, and actual time expected to serve in prison. Another section uses aggregate figures for all jurisdictions to produce tables which show relevant offender characteristics and sentences that enable comparison between offense types. Another major section contains interstate comparisons of legal status and sentence lengths. Offender legal status, sentence for most serious offense, the aggregate sentence, and the expected duration of imprisonment are presented, classified by most serious offense for each jurisdiction. These tables are intended to facilitate interjurisdictional comparison of overall sentencing practices for various offense types and should be useful in the evaluation of differences in legislation and parole rules. Tables for aboriginal prisoners only are also included as are tables of average times being served. 36 tables, 8 figures, data collection form, and supplementary appended data
