This report describes the characteristics and recidivism of offenders sentenced under a New Jersey law providing mandatory minimum prison sentences for offenders convicted of possessing or using a firearm in connection with certain personal crimes.
Abstract
These offenses include murder, aggravated assault, robbery, burglary, aggravated sexual assault, and other crimes. The analysis showed that more than 8 percent of adult State prison admissions in 1984 had committed offenses under this law. Eighty percent of these offenders had been convicted of a violent crime, most often robbery. Sixty percent were under age 30, and 90 percent under age 40. Ninety-six percent were male. Almost one-third of these offenders received a concurrent sentence for the possession of a firearm for unlawful purpose. Figures and tables
