During 1989, inmates performed 6.5 million hours of community service with a value of more than $50 million. Inmates working on Federal projects generally provide forest and range improvements for either the Bureau of Land Management or the U.S. Forest Service, with other Federal agencies receiving assistance on request. Services performed for State agencies include fire fighting and prevention; highway litter control, park and recreation area maintenance, forest conservation, and search-and-rescue services. Inmates also reupholster furniture for State institutions and print materials for both State and local government agencies. Services provided to cities and counties include road clearance, tree trimming, park maintenance, weed abatement, toy repairs, firewood cutting, and many other activities.
