The first panel spoke about the transition from FPI operating in traditional industries to FPI forming mutual beneficial partnerships with private sector businesses in existing and new markets. The panel addressed the impact of FPI on the furniture, textile, printing, electronics, and apparel industries and diversification into new markets. The panel also covered the impact of FPI on private sector workers and small businesses, the nature of the Federal product marketplace, and viable methods of productively employing the growing Federal prison inmate population. The panel made various recommendations for improving FPI that would be compatible with small business interests. The second panel briefly discussed FPI's importance to the Bureau of Prisons, the impact of FPI on the private sector, partnerships with small businesses, and FPI markets.
