The guide is intended to assist the instructor in developing an appropriate lesson plan to cover certain performance objectives. It is divided into two primary sections. The first section covers principles of weaponless defense. It is envisioned that the student will understand basic control techniques of weaponless defense, identify danger areas of the body, identify parts of the body that can be used to overcome resistance, demonstrate a control hold and a recognized take-down tactic, and be able to use a carotid restraint. The second section covers armed suspects and weapon retention. It is hoped that the student will learn to defend against an armed assilant and principles of weapon retention, demonstrate appropriate foot movements to avoid the suspect, identify techniques and the mental preparation needed to disarm the suspect, be able to perform front and rear gun take-aways, and demonstrate methods of disarming the suspect.
