Abstract
The first section discusses drug arrest trends in Virginia, drug arrest rates in various localities, felony arrests and convictions in the State and nationwide, and the drugs involved in Virginia felony drug convictions. The chapter on drug criminals presents a demographic profile of Virginia offenders convicted of all drug felonies as well as specific drug felonies, prior criminal record information for Virginia felons, and recidivism rates for Virginia drug felons sentenced to probation or released from prison during the reporting period. The discussion of the criminal justice response covers a range of subjects including case attrition for Virginia felony drug arrests, case processing time, Virginia State forensic lab drug specimen analyses, conviction and sentencing trends, drug commitments in Virginia prisons, parole grant rates for Virginia drug offenders, and Virginia drug crime legislation. 43 figures
