Community policing is a philosophy that goes beyond the Neighborhood Watch concept to advocate the formation of a full partnership between police and the community. Community policing broadens the police mandate beyond a narrow focus on crime fighting to include efforts to address fear of crime, social and physical disorder, and neighborhood decay.
Abstract
Communities across the country have responded positively to community policing, which has pushed departments to change the daily work of police to include investigating problems as well as incidents. Community policing units have closed drug houses, rid neighborhoods of gangs, established gang hotlines, and targeted high-crime areas. In addition, officers work with youth in programs to prevent crime, gang activity, and substance abuse and with the elderly to address their unique needs. 14 notes
