Results indicate that, in terms of prior arrests and convictions, residents averaged 7.6 arrests. Seventy-five percent of the current State prison residents had prior convictions, and two thirds had been convicted of a violent offense. Only 9 percent of the State prison population had no reported history of violence and no prior convictions. Sixty percent of the residents had at least one drug arrest and 40 percent at least one drug conviction. Forty percent of residents incarcerated for violent offenses had prior violent convictions as did 30 percent of those residents serving a sentence for a non-violent offense at the time of this survey.
