Following a description of the New Jersey Criminal Disposition Commission's organizational structure and development, this report summarizes Commission activities and accomplishments and proposes recommendations for consideration by the Governor and the Legislature.
Abstract
Major accomplishments of the Criminal Disposition Commission during its tenth year include distribution of a second printing of a public information booklet on crime in New Jersey and the criminal justice system, a descriptive evaluation of pretrial release programs in two counties, preparation of a request for proposal on public attitudes toward intermediate punishment, two phases of a descriptive study of the Graves Mandatory Minimum Gun Control Law, creation of a long range plan to integrate the various criminal justice database systems, and distribution of a survey to assess available alternative programs. The Commission recommends modifying the Court Disposition Reporting System to ensure data accuracy and completeness, expanding the use of alternative programs to incarceration, evaluating current and proposed alternative programs, increasing the level of funding resources and support for current probation and parole supervision, and appointing a minority member to the Commission. 3 figures and 1 table
