Following a review of the history, statutory powers, and membership of the North Carolina Sheriffs' Education and Training Standards Commission report, the focus turns to a review of Commission program issues to be addressed in 1989.
Abstract
The North Carolina Sheriffs' Education and Training Standards Commission has established a Professional Certificate Program which gives local and statewide recognition to dedicated officers for education, professional training, and on-the-job experience and a Service Awards Program which recognizes loyal and competent service. The Commission is mandated by statute to establish rules, regulations, and standards for the administration of schools, training programs, or courses of instruction by which sheriffs' personnel receive training and to define the areas of responsibility for the institutions and personnel associated with the delivery of mandated training. In 1989, the Commission will review a drug testing proposal, a course management guide for the basic jailer course, and a proposal to develop a professional certificate program for jailers as well as consider in-service training for grandfathered jailers and all jailers. 8 figures
