Under the Criminal Injuries Compensation Act, a report must be filed by the injured victim with the police as soon as possible, and the victim must cooperate with the police in apprehending the offender. The claim must be filed with the Board within 2 years. Two prerequisites for filing claims are that the crime be listed in the Act's schedule of crimes and that the crime directly result in injury or death to the victim. Benefits available include 75 percent of wages, medical and dental expenses, and rehabilitation services. Payment is not made for pain or suffering.
