Abstract
Some current perceptions of discipline are examined, and the elements of a good discipline program are defined. Current approaches to discipline problems described use specific techniques and focus on certain points of view concerning human behavior. These include teacher effectiveness training, reality therapy, assertive discipline, the least approach to discipline, behavior modification, democratic problem solving process, behavior contracts, and social literacy training. Successful programs that yield positive results are described in detail, especially for peer counseling, alternative education/alternatives to suspension, in-school suspension, ombudspersons, innovative curricula, law-related education, and student involvement. Outdoor education, parent involvement, community involvement, community schools, comprehensive programs, and approaches are also included. For each of the programs, a contact person and an address is provided for further information. The most recent and highly recommended books on discipline are listed in a bibliography.
