Abstract
During the year, the police recorded 256,900 stops and searches, an increase of 27 percent over 1989. Thirty-eight percent of these stops and searches were made for stolen property, and 38 percent were for drug law offenses. The stops and searches resulted in 39,200 arrests. The police also recorded 298 road checks and 542 persons who were detained for more than 24 hours and subsequently released without charge. They also recorded 401 warrants of detention to extend detention beyond 36 hours. Eighty-one percent of these cases involved subsequent charges. The police conducted 51 strip searches compared to 50 in 1989. Figures and tables
