A sample of 113 men convicted of child sexual offenses in the Pacific Northwest was used to validate previous research that had cluster-analyzed the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) profiles of nonincarcerated child molesters.
Abstract
There were eight identified clusters in the original research. The subgroups were described as characterological-avoidant, elevated masculinity-femininity (representative of the average offender), characterological-suspicious, psychotic-aggressive, normal-episodic, normal-repressed, normal-avoidant, and psychotic-withdrawn. The present study validated six of these eight MMPI profile subtypes. In addition, subgroups were differentiated along dimensions of sexual deviance. Differences among subtypes in psychosexual functioning provide additional descriptive information about the child molester subgroups. A notable difference found between these subgroups and profiles found among incarcerated rapists was the absence of generally sociopathic profiles. 1 figure, 2 tables, 1 note, and 17 references
