Research undertaken and planned during 1990-91 is reported for the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) which investigates how to reduce crime and strengthen the criminal justice system in the United States.
Abstract
The introduction states that NIJ is responsible for a balanced agenda of basic and applied research that examines the operations of justice agencies, analyzes criminal justice policies, evaluates crime and drug control programs across the Nation, and explores criminal behavior. NIJ activities for 1990-91 have been in the general areas of criminal justice needs assessment, evaluation, community policing, drugs and crime, science and technology, gangs, organized crime, white-collar crime, prosecution and adjudication programs, intermediate punishments, prison and jail construction information exchange, crime-control research, crime victims, and private security. During the year, NIJ has focused on providing practical results to help police make the best use of citizens and community resources in addressing crime and drug problems and to aid criminal investigators and prosecutors in tracking and convicting violent offenders with attention to scientific advances in evidence analysis. NIJ efforts have also focused on improved court case processing, an increase in the use of a range of intermediate sanctions, expanded prison and jail capacity, and information dissemination through a comprehensive international clearinghouse. Information is provided on the NIJ Fellowship Program and fiscal year 1990 grants and contracts.
