NCJ Number
133988
Date Published
1991
Length
22 pages
Annotation
Relying solely on data that already exist through established surveys or standard reporting systems, the Drug Impact Index documents and illustrates the extent of the local drug problem in Portland, Oregon.
Abstract
The 10 indicators selected to provide a picture of the impact of drugs cover important aspects of the problem: drug overdose deaths, drug-affected babies, drug use in arrestees, hospital emergency room visits, drug and alcohol use by adolescents, adult and juvenile arrests for drug offenses, parent training participation, and positives in pre-employment drug testing. Deaths due to drug overdoses continue to increase each year, both in Portland and throughout Oregon. Lower 1990 levels reflect a general pattern of reduced drug use among the student population both locally and statewide. A technical note and comments accompany each indicator and table. 10 tables and 10 references
