Data were collected from 73 State-operated adult correctional institutions and used to describe programs and strategies for the rehabilitation of adult sex offenders.
Abstract
Program directors who responded to the survey were asked to explain treatment incentives, describe their program's history, list the treatment modalities in use, and outline any changes in treatment modalities they would like to implement. The study focuses on three treatment modalities: behavior modification, organic treatment, and psychotherapy. The analysis indicates that, while behavior modification is the treatment modality most often used now, program directors would favor increasing the use of biological, or organic, treatment. The five psychotherapy techniques used most frequently are individual and group counseling, victim empathy, sex education, and accountability therapy. Outcome and process evaluation research is needed to provide empirical assessments of each rehabilitative modality currently used in existing sex offender treatment programs. 3 tables, 6 notes, 98 references
