Relatively little empirical research has been conducted on adolescent male sex offenders. Available research has been unable to empirically identify the causes of adolescent sexual deviance, but studies have demonstrated the need for early therapeutic intervention in the sexually aggressive behavior of young males. Some specific individual and family variables have been identified to assist in the assessment of adolescent sex offenders.
Abstract
The Community Based Sexual Offenders Outpatient Treatment Program, which serves three groups of adult sex offenders and one group of adolescent sex offenders, is designed to address issues of aggression, sexuality, and interpersonal relations. The participating offenders must receive ongoing individual assessment and treatment planning, accept responsibility for their behavior, demonstrate a recognition of their offense behavior patterns, and be involved in restitution activities. In addition, offenders engage in reeducation and resocialization processes, participate in a sexual offenders treatment group, and have access to continued treatment. Future studies need to compare subgroups of adolescent sex offenders to examine patterns of long-term recidivism and to evaluate specific treatment interventions. 1 table and 15 references
