Abstract
Felony drug law violations appear to be 5 percent over 1989. Other crimes against the person and against property that are frequently drug-related, including robbery, burglary, grand theft and auto theft, show greater percentage increases. The most significant change since 1985 is the increased prison commitment rate for felony drug law violations (from 25 to almost 40 percent for all drug law violations). There has been a noticeable, but smaller increase in the commitment rate for assault with a deadly weapon (from 45 to 50 percent). Superior courts in the Second Appellate District appear to have a consistently higher prison commitment rate for burglary and other property crimes than superior courts in the First Appellate District; superior courts in the First Appellate District send a lower percentage of those guilty of possession of narcotics to prisons than superior courts in the balance of the State. 13 tables and 8 footnotes.
