Parents are advised to believe their child, reassure the child that the child is believed and loved and was right to report the abuse, and make sure the child understands that the child is the victim and is not to blame for the abuse. They should also talk to the child openly, calmly, and lovingly; avoid making threats regarding the offender; report the crime; call child protective services; trust the authorities; and keep accurate and detailed notes. In addition, they should include the child in discussions and plans regarding prosecution, explain to the child about testifying honestly, ask the prosecutor to keep the parent informed, seek advice and help from the local victim information program, ask about videotaping the child's testimony, and seek professional counseling for the child. The counselor should have experience in treating sexually abused children, and the child should also be examined by a physician.
