This handbook guides researchers under the sponsorship of the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) in how to deposit the data from their research with NIJ's Data Resources Program (DRP).
Abstract
The DRP promotes secondary data analysis by requiring that original data obtained under NIJ grants be documented and delivered to the DRP at the time projects are completed. Such data sets are then archived and made available to other researchers for secondary analysis. One section of the handbook outlines the responsibilities of the principal investigators in the preparation of data for archiving. The investigators must submit data and supporting materials, respond to requests from DRP staff for additional or clarifying information, and review and correct draft materials prepared by the DRP staff. The second section of the handbook provides information on DRP staff's responsibilities in the preparation of data for archiving. The DRP staff prepares the data files in a format suitable for transmittal to the National Archive of Criminal Justice Data, produces a user's guide that describes the project and data, and reviews the codebook for completeness and accuracy. DRP staff also make available to the research community copies of data sets archived since October 1989.
