The number of criminal cases filed totaled 30,239, a decrease of over 3 percent from the previous year. Of the 28,567 criminal cases terminated, the vast majority involved defendant's guilty pleas. The pending caseload increased nearly 7 percent over the figures in fiscal year 1983. Grand Jury proceedings resulted in 17,419 indictments and 68 No True Bills. Criminal complaints received increased nearly 30 percent; most complaints were received in the categories of bank robbery, controlled substances, counterfeiting and forgery, embezzlement, escape, fraud, immigration, income tax, motor vehicle theft, stole property, postal law violations, and weapons control. The number of civil cases filed totaled over 100,000, an increase of 7.69 percent over the previous year. Civil matters received, including tax liens, torts, VA educational benefits, and delegated general claims, increased only 1.5 percent. A total of nearly 800,000 hours in court were spent by U.S. Attorneys in 1984, a decrease of over 9 percent. During the reporting period, the 93 U.S. Attorneys recovered nearly $370 million in actual assets of cash and property. 14 charts and 37 tables
