These statistical charts and tables depict information related to the workload of United States Attorneys in fiscal year 1983.
Abstract
The number of criminal cases filed totaled 31,243, an increase of 6.55 percent from the previous year. Of the 30,451 criminal cases terminated, the vast majority involved defendants' guilty pleas. The pending caseload increased just over 3 percent compared to the figures in fiscal year 1982. Grand Jury proceedings results in 17,702 indictments and 63 No True Bills. Criminal complaints received increased nearly 4 percent; most complaints were received in the categories of bank robbery, controlled substances, counterfeiting and forgery, embezzlement, escape, fraud, immigration, income tax, motor vehicle theft, stolen property, postal law violations, and weapons control. The number of civil cases filed totaled 93,694, an increase of nearly 26 percent over the previous year. Civil matters received, including tax liens, torts, VA educational benefits, and delegated general claims, increased over 25 percent. A total of nearly 879,740 hours in court were spent by U.S. Attorneys in 1983, a decrease of almost 28 percent. During the reporting period, the 93 U.S. Attorneys recovered over $275 million in actual assets of cash and property. 14 charts and 37 tables
