Of all criminal filings, 72.86 percent involved 14 offenses. The greatest volume of filings were in controlled substances (4,161), immigration (1,909), fraud versus government (1,770), bank robbery (1,643), weapons control (1,570), banks and banking (1,488), income tax (1,364), postal crimes (1,287), and mail and wire fraud (1,082). Cases terminated decreased by 1.03 percent over the previous year. Of 27,588 cases closed, 16,931 involving 22,248 defendants were pleas of guilty, 2,975 involving, 4,595 defendants were found guilty after trial, and 652 involving 1,133 defendants were found not guilty. With 25,193 cases, the pending caseload showed an increase of 1,159 or 4.82 percent more than the 24,034 cases pending at the close of FY 1980. Grand jury proceedings, comprised of 16,699 indictments and 95 No True Bills, amounted to 16,794, an increase of 1.21 percent over the previous fiscal year. Criminal complaints received increased to 99,067, slightly more than the 98,601 received in FY 1980. Civil cases filed totaled 70,058, an increase of 2,973 or 4.43 percent more than the prior year's total. This figure included 11,300 cases filed in State court and 2,749 civil appeals. Civil cases pending at the close of FY 1881 increased by 8,620 or 9.38 percent to 100,499. A total of 595,225 hours were spent in court during FY 1981, 3.53 percent more than in FY 1980. Collections for FY 1981 amounted to $226.8 million, a 3.53-percent decrease from FY 1980. Detailed statistical charts and tables are provided.
