A survey by Corrections Compendium, conducted in November and December 1990, obtained data on correctional officers (CO's) in each U.S. State, the District of Columbia, the Federal Bureau of Prisons, and Canadian Provinces and Territories as well as the Correctional Services of Canada.
Abstract
For each jurisdiction, the data presented cover total number of CO's, the percentage of males working in female institutions, the percentage of females working in male institutions, officer-inmate ratio, annual turnover rate, starting annual salary and average annual salary, and the number of positions to be added in 1991. Data also address entry requirements, whether actual qualifications exceed requirements, training provided by department (at start and annually), officers represented by union and union name, whether recruitment of CO's is a problem and the reason, and whether support groups or counseling are available. The survey indicates that 155,363 CO's are employed in the 50 State systems, the Federal Bureau of Prisons, and the District of Columbia. This compares to 67,527 in 1986 and 127,036 in 1988. With inmate populations rapidly increasing, another 13,735 CO's are expected to be added in 1991. The data are presented in a chart.
