This analysis of the future role of housing assistance programs in recruiting law enforcement personnel concludes that providing local housing has many benefits both for the police officers and for the community, although local governments are unlikely to have the fiscal resources to support these potentially costly programs.
Abstract
Living in the community helps develop a greater sense of community, reduces commuting time, and makes emergency callbacks of employees more efficient and manageable. Programs designed to be financially self-supporting over time should be attractive to communities that place a high value on public safety. Therefore, this issue should be the subject of further research. Figures, footnotes, chapter notes, appended background information and interview results, and 37 references
