Information was gathered during the course of three separate empirical investigations in an effort to provide a conceptual framework for further empirical research as to the association between drugs and violence.
Abstract
Drugs and violence were found to be related in three possible ways: psychopharmacologically; economic compulsively; and systemically or in traditionally aggressive patterns of interaction within the system of drug distribution and use. These three different forms of drug related violence were found to be related to different types of substance use, different motivations of violent perpetrators, different types of victims, and differential influence by social context. Current methods of collecting national crime data fail to be responsive to the etiological role played by drug use and trafficking in creating violent crime. 49 references
